Message of solidarity from the writers on Pan Am, members of the Writers Guild of America West

Dear Members of the Virgin America Inflight Team Member Organizing Committee,

We are the writers of the television series Pan Am, about the lives of flight attendants working for Pan American Airlines in the 1960s. We are also proud members of the Writers Guild of America West, the union that represents television and screenwriters.

We understand that the Inflight Team Members at Virgin America have petitioned for a union election for 650 ITMs. We applaud your courage and encourage your efforts to establish clear terms and working conditions for all Team Members. .

We understand In the airline industry, Virgin America Inflight Team Members are known for their innovative approach to serving the airline’s customers. As writers who often work collaboratively on projects with other writers, producers, directors, actors, and crew members, we agree that creativity, inspiration and teamwork are essential to getting the job done. We are, however, only able to produce our best work with the clarity that comes from working under a union contract. We support your efforts to gain a voice at Virgin America and truly believe that working under a union contract will greatly enhance your work life.

We wish you the best in your election. As each of you casts your vote remember that you are not alone. We stand with you in solidarity.

Sincerely,

Steven Maeda, on behalf of the writers on Pan Am
